How does 4G home broadband work?

4G home broadband provides an internet service for a property through 4G signals, rather than relying on any wiring or fixed landline. We all know that today’s smartphones allow you to get online via 4G when you’re out and about. Well, with the right equipment, 4G can just as easily be used to deliver a primary broadband connection to a home or business, no matter where they are.

All that's needed to get a 4G home broadband service up and running is a dedicated 4G WiFi router, a SIM card with an appropriate monthly tariff and of course sufficient 4G signal strength at the particular location.

(And not as much signal strength as you might think would be needed – but more on that later).

What speeds does 4G home broadband provide?

4G speeds do vary based on individual location. If you’re in an excellent signal strength area, it is more than possible to see download speeds in excess of 90 Mbps or even higher, but when measured across the nation as a whole, 4G broadband performance averages around 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload.

That might not sound like much to some, but to those homes with poor landline internet, it represents a simply huge improvement. And it’s that improvement which makes such a genuinely life-changing difference.

Who would benefit most from 4G broadband?

There are an estimated 600,000 homes and businesses scattered all across the UK that still don't have access to any sort of landline broadband offering speeds above 10Mbps.For fairly obvious reasons, such properties tend to be more rurally located – and these are the ones that would benefit most from a fast and reliable 4G broadband service.

In fact, it’s widely acknowledged that 4G broadband is the ideal alternative broadband solution for properties in rural areas that struggle to get a decent connection.

But 4G broadband can also be used for holiday homes, as a backup service in case your main internet connection goes down or even to run alongside an existing landline broadband service if it’s overloaded.

What can 4G broadband do?

With a 4G broadband service, you'll be able to do everything you’d expect to be able to do online – just without the frustrating delays caused by slow broadband. That includes streaming video without buffering, accessing on-demand TV whenever you like, online gaming, working from home (including making and receiving video calls), social media, web browsing and so on.

Just like any other primary broadband service, a 4G broadband connection can be used by multiple devices at once, because again in exactly the same way, it’s distributed around a property by WiFi (and by ethernet too, if you want). So there’s no need to wait for someone to stop using it before you can.

Are there any limitations to 4G broadband?

No – provided that you make sure you choose a 4G home broadband service that is truly unlimited. That means one that firstly has no monthly data usage limits (so you and your family can use the internet as much as you like) and secondly one that doesn’t automatically throttle back speeds – because you want all your data to be transmitted at the maximum speed available all of the time.

And although 4G broadband isn’t generally quite as fast as the sort of broadband you’d expect to find in cities and major towns, that’s not really a problem either. It's a bit of a myth that you need to have broadband speeds in the triple digits for your internet connection to be effective. Generally, you'll find that any speeds above 20Mbps provide a perfectly good broadband experience.

And especially if your home is one of the many currently struggling with single figure broadband speeds. As we’ve said, it’s all about the dramatic improvement that 4G home broadband delivers to those who most need it.

4G home broadband in areas with poor 4G signal

As many of our own surprised but delighted customers already know, this isn't necessarily a problem at all – even in places where mobile phones only show next to no 4G coverage.

In locations where 4G signal levels are weak or flaky, a carefully chosen high gain 4G antenna can be fitted to the outside of a property. This will be far more effective at picking up available 4G signals, boosting them and piping them down to a 4G router inside the premises and thus providing a broadband service over 4G which is both fast and reliable.

So even in the hardest to reach areas, 4G broadband is now a more than viable solution.

4G antenna installation is something we at National Broadband specialise in as part of our commitment to make sure that every UK property has the best broadband possible for where they are. Find out more about this here.
