Finding the very best broadband service for your location

Broadband can be confusing, because there are different ways of getting your home or business connected.

If you're in an urban environment you'll probably have a number of different types of broadband available to you, but which would be best?

In contrast, if you live rurally, you may think that there are no alternatives, so you're fated to be stuck with painfully slow landline broadband - but that's just not true.

The different types of landline broadband...

Diagram showing the different types of landline broadband

1

Full fibre broadband (also known as fibre to the premises or FTTP)

Full fibre is the fastest type of broadband currently available, offering speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second or more (that's 1,000 Mbps). A property with full fibre broadband is connected directly to the internet via fibre optic cable. As well as being the best for extremely fast data transmission, fibre optic cables also suffer from minimal signal loss, so the broadband performance they offer remains unimpaired.

2

Part fibre broadband (also known as fibre to the cabinet or FTTC)

With part fibre broadband, although the street cabinet serving a property is connected to the internet via fibre optic cable, that cabinet is only connected to the property by copper wiring. Using copper wiring causes unavoidable signal loss, with that getting worse as the length of copper wiring used increases. Average speeds can reach around 55 Mbps, but will be far lower than that if a property is not close to its cabinet.

3

Copper broadband (also known as ADSL)

With an all-copper broadband service, the entire connection between a property, the cabinet serving it and the internet runs over copper wiring. On top of being unsuitable for higher speed data transmission, those long runs of copper wire also suffer from considerable signal loss. That's why copper broadband services provide the worst broadband performance, with speeds often struggling to reach even 10 Mbps.

...and then there's 4G and 5G broadband

4G and 5G broadband don't rely on any form of copper wiring. Instead, 4G and 5G are types of signal transmitted wirelessly by the UK's mobile network operators from their phone masts which are themselves connected to the internet by fibre optic cables.

If there's coverage where you are, with the right equipment either type of mobile signal can be used to provide a fast and stable broadband service to a single property. And best of all, this can be done in a matter of days. There's no need to wait any longer to have great broadband.

Let's get you connected!

Our superfast 4G Essential Broadband services

for locations where 4G coverage is good

4G router on a table

If your home or business lies in an area with strong 4G coverage from any of the UK's mobile networks (and we're partnered with all four), then our best value superfast 4G Essential Broadband option is the one for you. We'll send you a 4G WiFi router along with a SIM card on the best network for your specific location. That will have you up and running in just a day or two on our superfast 4G broadband service, with download speeds averaging around 30 Mbps.

Our superfast 4G Boosted Broadband services

for rural areas or for maximizing 4G broadband performance

But if your property is in an area where 4G strength is weaker or if you want to ensure that your 4G broadband's performance is optimised, then our 4G Boosted Broadband option is your best solution. We'll visit your premises and install a small but highly effective outdoor 4G antenna. This latches onto and boosts available 4G signals before piping them down to the indoor WiFi router we'll also provide. Getting set up typically takes no more than two weeks.

Our ultrafast 5G Essential Broadband services

for locations with good 5G coverage

And if your property has got good 5G coverage - as is the case in an ever-growing number of places - then choose our ultrafast 5G Essential Broadband option. We'll send you a top specification 5G WiFi router, again with a SIM card from the network offering the strongest 5G coverage at your particular location. Within a couple of days, you'll be enjoying ultrafast 5G broadband with download speeds of around 150 Mbps, or quite possibly much faster than that.
