Fast broadband in rural Lincolnshire

Getting the best connection means finding the right provider

Situated in the East Midlands, Lincolnshire is the UK's second largest county by area and boasts a diverse landscape of sandy beaches, lush woodland, rolling fields and bustling communities. It's home to the historic city of Lincoln with its iconic cathedral as well as popular seaside town Skegness.

But what about Lincolnshire's broadband?

Ofcom has revealed that over 385,000 homes in the UK experience broadband speeds under the national minimum standard of 10 Mbps. In Lincolnshire alone, over 11,000 households can't get broadband speeds running at that minimum level and around half of these properties are in less densely populated rural parts of the county. So if you live in places such as West or East Lindsey, Sleaford or South Kesteven, you may be struggling to find a decent landline-broadband service.

Why do rural communities typically have such poor broadband?

All too often rural communities just don't benefit from the same digital advantages that urban communities have. This is down to one simple thing - the sheer cost and time involved in putting in high speed landline-based broadband, making infrastructure providers such as Openreach unwilling to invest. In turn this leaves numerous rural communities trapped with nigh on unusably slow internet connections. This disparity between urban and rural connectivity is known as the Digital Divide.

The majority of UK homes and businesses UK receive their broadband service down a copper landline from a streetside cabinet that is connected to the internet by fibreoptic cables. Each of these cabinets can serve a number of properties and if your home is close to the cabinet serving it, you can expect broadband performance of around 60 to 70 Mbps. However if you live in a rural area where the cabinet is very likely to be further away, you are almost inevitably going to experience problems with your broadband connection and will quickly become frustrated with slow or intermittent internet.

This happens because when the cabinet that serves your property is a kilometre or more away, the broadband signals travelling up and down the lengthy copper landline weaken due to something called attenuation. This leads to much reduced broadband performance and a frustratingly slow overall internet connection.

There is a traditional solution, but...

The only way to resolve this from a landline broadband point of view is for a second cabinet to be installed closer to your property. However this is a very time-consuming and expensive process that normally costs tens of thousands of pounds and takes months to get done. So infrastructure providers won't bother taking such steps if it's only going to assist a small number of homes, because it just wouldn't make commercial sense for them to do so.

That's precisely why very poor internet speeds are far more common for rural homes and businesses - and why they're not likely to see a landline-based solution being put in place any time soon. And in turn that explains why more isolated families and businesses are left digitally deprived and unable to enjoy the wealth of online advantages that a fast broadband service offers.

What is 4G broadband and what makes it the most effective way to deliver broadband to rural areas?

4G refers to the frequencies that the mobile networks use to transmit data via phone masts. These are used by smartphones to connect people to the internet when they're out and about, without needing wires or cables.

But with the right equipment, 4G can also be used to supply rapid and reliable broadband to a single fixed location such as a home or business.

For rural households and companies, our fast 4G broadband solves the issue of slow internet. By using 4G networks, it provides properties with a speedy and stable broadband service, which is available almost anywhere and almost immediately.

Faster rural broadband is almost always available, no matter where your home or business is

You might think that a 4G broadband service won't solve your slow internet because the 4G signal on your smartphone isn't the strongest where you are... but that's not necessarily true at all. Here's why.

First off, because we work with all the UK's major mobile network operators, we will carefully select the one offering the best 4G coverage at your specific location. Plus, compared to any smartphone. the 4G router we supply is much more receptive to 4G signals, so for many of our customers, that's the only piece of hardware they'll require. But even if you do live in a location where the available 4G coverage is patchy or unreliable... we can still help with our rural broadband solutions.

It's all about the compact but hugely effective outdoor 4G antenna that we supply and install whenever required. This high gain unit makes all the difference, allowing us to deliver fast and reliable rural broadband over 4G even in locations with very low 4G signal levels. In other words, our antenna maximises 4G broadband performance wherever your property may be.

Lots of our customers have been very pleasantly surprised by the great 4G broadband they get once we've installed an outdoor antenna at their residence or place of business. It's this that enables us to supply fast and reliable broadband even in areas where mobile phones don't work well due to low signal strength.
