Problems caused by slow BT broadband

With ever-increasing amounts of our home and working lives being spent online these days, a good quality internet connection has never been more important. Whether it's trying to stream your favourite program, working from home, or online shopping... the last thing anyone needs is a slow BT internet service.

You might be interested to discover the likely reason why your broadband is so poor and if so, just click below. But much more importantly, what are your options if you do have slow internet?

Landline Broadband Problems

Fixing slow BT broadband – things to check first

There are a few things you should do first.

1) Check your WiFi coverage

Some of the time, your slow broadband may actually have nothing to do with your BT internet service. It could instead be to do with the WiFi coverage around your property.

Do you find that your BT internet works well in some rooms but not in others? Does your internet get slower, the further away you are from your BT router? If so, that’s almost certainly a WiFi coverage problem.

There’s an easy way to make sure one way or the other. Connect a laptop or other device into your BT router by ethernet cable – or if you can’t do that, make sure you’re standing right next to the router when wirelessly connected to it. Then run a speed test.

Broadband Speed Test

If that comes back fast, then your problem is almost certainly internal WiFi related and not to do with your incoming broadband performance. This can often be the case with larger properties or those with thick internal walls.

There are very effective and easy solutions available to dramatically improve your WiFi coverage. Click here to find out how.

2) Check your broadband connection is not being overloaded

Is your BT internet only slow at certain times of the day? If so, this may be because too many users within your home are hammering it all at once.

An incoming broadband connection can be compared to incoming mains water. You may have perfectly good mains water pressure at the kitchen tap – but if everyone in your home decides to run a bath or take a shower at the same time, then each tap within the house will run slowly, because the incoming service is being shared out across several simultaneous users.

Obviously the faster the incoming broadband service, the better it will be at keeping up with concurrent demand. So if your incoming broadband speed is say only 15 Mbps, that might well be fine when it’s just you using it, but it slows to a crawl when the family’s at home and all online.

If this is the case, you should think about changing to a faster broadband service, like 4G broadband. Or you may want to think about getting a second entirely separate broadband connection, which is reserved for the parents in the house. Learn more here.

3) Contact BT about your slow broadband service

It's also quite possible there is a fault with your line or equipment. So it's a very good idea to get in touch with BT customer service, as they can check things over and see if they can spot any faults that may have developed.

Other solutions for slow BT internet

So you've made sure it's not your WiFi, and you’ve checked that your connection is not being overloaded. You’ve also spoken to BT about your slow broadband and they have unfortunately confirmed there's nothing they can do. What are your options then?

First, let's find out what speeds you're actually getting.

Run a speed test below.

Remember those speeds as we'll come back to them.

So, if BT just can’t improve the slow broadband it's supplying you with, it’s time to consider abandoning landline broadband and going wireless instead.

Introducing 4G broadband

4G broadband is an internet service that uses the 4G network to provide a primary broadband connection instead of a fixed line. In other words, a wireless service.

This means that you won’t be dependent on a landline that just can’t deliver adequate internet speeds and instead you’ll be connected via a faster wireless service.

And what if you don't get good 4G signals in your area? Not a problem. Over the last few years, it’s been widely recognised that a wireless service like 4G broadband is by far the most cost-effective and quickest way to get fast internet to those areas most in need – which are typically more rural.

It’s true that rural locations often don’t have great 4G coverage, and that’s precisely why external high gain 4G antennas can be fitted to properties where necessary. These latch onto available 4G signals and amplify them, before piping them down to a router inside the home or business. The result? A fast and stable 4G broadband service, even where next to no signal is being shown on mobile phones.

Providing high quality broadband to rural locations is a service that we at National Broadband specialise in. And we’re so confident in what we do that we put our money where our mouth is with a full money back guarantee. So there's literally nothing to lose – but potentially a whole lot to gain.
